About the Tennessee Nursing License Process

Obtaining a Tennessee nursing license begins with a visit to the Tennessee Board of Nursing. Here, you will find everything you need to know about getting licensed as an RN.

Apply For A Tennessee Nursing License

Nurses who already hold an active license in another state can apply by endorsement. New nurses who have graduated from nursing school and are applying for their first license will need to apply by exam. You should allow approximately six weeks for license processing.

Applicants for either type of license will need the following:

  • Verification of state residency
  • Criminal background check
  • Declaration/verification of citizenship
  • Passport-type photo
  • Social security number
  • Copy of nursing diploma or transcript from initial nursing education (endorsement only)

Tennessee Nursing Fee

Last year, the Board eliminated the fee for applying by exam, something that few other states have done for their new applicants. The other fees are outlined below. Board of Nursing Fee Schedule – Fees are payable to the State of Tennessee.

  • Exam & Exam Retake Fee eliminated as of 08/05/2019
  • Endorsement $115.00
  • Reinstatement $200.00
  • Renewal $100.00

Steps to Renew Your License with the Tennessee Board Of Nursing

A Tennessee nursing license can be renewed up to 60 days prior to the expiration date. Tennessee Board of Nursing has designated NURSYS as a primary source equivalent. For additional information regarding nursing licensure status in other states, go to Nursys.com.
