Tips To Apply For or Renew Your Washington D.C. Nursing License

Registered nurses who are licensed in another state can apply for licensure by endorsement to the DC Board of Nursing, a division within the DC Department of Health, Health Regulation and Licensing Administration (HRLA). 1. Our DC licensing liaison will send all the RN licensing documents that you’ll need to complete in one packet, via FedEx, with clear, step-by-step instructions.

2. After receipt, just return the completed application within 3-5 days, including two 2”x2” passport photos, a copy of your driver’s license or other government-issued ID, a copy of a completed Nursys license endorsement to the District of Columbia, and a $230 check, using the prepaid FedEx envelope.

3. Visit the DC Board of Nursing website, register for a background check, and pay a $50 fee. Then follow the directions to schedule and complete electronic fingerprinting through a local FieldPoint office.

Need to Renew Your Washington D.C. License?

Every two years, nurses may apply for renewal of their Washington DC nursing license and pay a $145 renewal fee online. Nurses who have renewed their license this year can verify the status of their license.

How Long Does it take to Get a DC Nursing License? It normally takes around 8 weeks to receive a nursing license by an endorsement from the District of Columbia Board of Nursing. Using American Mobile’s expedited process, however, a travel nurse can receive his or her license within 4 to 5 weeks after requesting the licensure packet.

Is Washington D.C. a compact state? Washington D.C. is not a Compact State. The District of Columbia is not yet part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, the multi-state agreement sponsored by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Nurses with a compact state license will still need to apply for DC nurse licensure by endorsement.
